A private intercom for a house full of kids

Five kids, five rooms, one house Wi-Fi. Build push-to-talk audio between ESP32 boards with no accounts, no cloud, and nothing a stranger on the street could join.

Requirements

Each device has a name and a button; hold to talk to all, tap a room name to talk to one

Audio is compressed (Opus or ADPCM) and sent over the LAN only

Devices find each other with mDNS — no IP addresses typed by anyone

Pairing uses a shared secret entered once on each device; unpaired devices are ignored

A simulator mode that runs five instances on one laptop with the microphone and speaker

Technical Notes

The simulator mode is the primary deliverable; firmware that shares the same protocol code is the stretch.
